February, the month of love and romance is here again and it’s time to spread the love around!
There are several stories and myths of how this day came to be dedicated as a special one for lovers.
In one version, around 270 AD there was an Emperor named Claudius II. At that time Rome was in chaos from strife within its own borders and from its neighbours, which included the Huns, Slavs, Turks and Mongolians.
Claudius II believed that marriage made soldiers weak because they became emotionally attached to their wives and families, and so he decided to ban the institution of marriage for his soldiers. The soldiers fell into despair over the ban, and this touched the heart of Bishop Valentine, who started to marry the soldiers secretly when they came to him.
Eventually the emperor came to hear about the secret weddings being performed and he arrested Bishop Valentine. It is believed that Bishop Valentine was executed on the 14th of February, and the day has since become a special one to lovers all over the world.
On this day, couples exchange cards, gifts and spend time with each other to affirm their love. In a broader sense, it has also come to be a time for people to express love and appreciation for others that they see as mentors, good friends or special people in their lives.
